University of Wyoming head football coach Dave Christensen announced early Tuesday that defensive coordinator Chris Tormey has been relieved of his duties on the Cowboy coaching staff effective immediately. Current defensive line coach Jamar Cain has been named the interim defensive coordinator.

In a release from the University of Wyoming, head coach Dave Christensen said, “I felt that we needed to make a change at this time to give our football team and the young men on it the best opportunity to win our remaining four regular-season games. The last two weeks, our defense has not performed up to the expectations of our coaching staff, our players, nor our fans.”

Tormey had been Wyoming’s defensive coordinator for the past two seasons, 2012 and ‘13. He will be paid through his contract, which expires in December of 2013.

Cain is currently in his seventh year as a college coach at the NCAA Division I level. He joined the Cowboy staff in the Spring of 2013 after helping lead Cal Poly to a share of the Big Sky Conference title in 2012.

Wyoming is on their second bye week of the season. The Cowboys have four regular-season games remaining. Next up are the nationally-ranked and undefeated Fresno State Bulldogs on November 9.
