They've been selling cars in Casper for 50 years, but that will soon come to an end.

The two Greiner auto dealerships have been sold to two different buyers.

Greiner Ford, Lincoln on the city's west side has been sold to an Oregon chain of dealerships, Lithia Motors which is headquartered in Medford. They own 139 dealerships in 11 states.

Greiner's east side store, which sells Buick, GMC and Cadillac has been sold to another Oregon-based company, the Spartan Auto Group, which has new car dealerships in  California, Montana, Oregon and Washington.

Together, the two dealerships employ 184 employees, with most working at the Ford store on CY Avenue.

No real reason was given by current owner Phil Schmidt other than the time was right for the transition. Schmidt told the Wyoming Business Review that despite some tough times for the economy of late, they have never had to lay off an employee.

The transition will be quick, with the Ford store closing Wednesday for a quick changeover in ownership, and the GM dealership closing later in the week for a one day transition. No word yet on the future of the current staff.
