A Casper woman was charged with one count of felony driving while under the influence in west Casper on Wednesday night.

Charlette James, born in 1970, also was charged with misdemeanor counts of driving under suspension and not having insurance, according to the police affidavit filed with Natrona County Circuit Court.

Police responded about 8:30 p.m. to Village Creek road where they found a sedan turned over on its roof in the middle of the street facing north. The sedan apparently struck the rear driver's side of a truck before rolling over.

Casper Fire-EMS personnel had responded to the scene and told police a woman was still inside the sedan sitting upright on the inside of the roof. Fire personnel broke windows to retrieve her, and she was identified as James by the license in her wallet.

After being pulled from the sedan, officers saw James' eyes were bloodshot, her speech was slurred, she smelled of alcohol, she exhibited exaggerated movements with her arms, and she fought the fire and paramedic staff. An officer saw containers of alcohol in the car.

The unsteady James was walked to an ambulance and taken to the Wyoming Medical Center. An officer accompanied her in the ambulance. She swore at the officer and made statements about "'wishing she were dead.'"

At the hospital, she consented to provide a blood sample, which showed a result of .301 blood alcohol concentration, which is nearly four times the legal limit of .08.

James' brother told police his sister had a lengthy history of alcohol-related offenses and alcoholism. He had talked to her on the telephone on Wednesday, and she told him she was very upset and experiencing delirium tremens.

A law enforcement database showed James had been charged with three previous DWUIs and convicted of at least one.

She was booked into the Natrona County Detention Center.
