A Casper man will serve prison time after admitting that he brutally beat a woman in April.

Russell Wright, 35, was sentenced to two-and-a-half to five years in prison with credit for time served after pleading guilty to one count of strangulation of a household member and one count of aggravated assault.

Wright was arrested in April after Casper police officers were called to a home in the 100 block of North Washington Street.

Court documents say the officers arrived to find blood spatter on the walls and floor of the bedroom. They also found a pair of bloodied scissors, bloodied hammers and a broken broom stick with blood on it.

The victim reportedly told officers at Wyoming Medical Center that she and Wright had been drinking, and a verbal argument escalated to physical violence.

Wright hit her with a metal rod and a hammer until she blacked out.

Eventually, she was able to walk to friend's house. Her friend called 911.

Wright initially claimed self-defense.
