A Casper family has been displaced after a house fire Sunday. According to Casper Fire-EMS, they were called out about 11:30 Sunday morning to a home on the 1900 block of Lennox Avenue. When they arrived, they found a backyard deck fully engulfed in fire and beginning to spread into the house and attic.

Firefighters began attacking the fire, searching the house for possible victims, and ventilating the structure. The fire was put out quickly, but units remained on scene until about 1:30 in the afternoon to watch the house and clean up some of the damage.

Casper Fire-EMS says all of the occupants made it out before firefighters arrived and there were no injuries, but they did find and rescue a dog from the home. It was assessed by Wyoming Medical Center and did not require any treatment.

The fire caused extensive damage to the exterior of the home, the attic, and the kitchen, and there was also smoke damage throughout, especially the upstairs rooms. Officials say the family will be displaced until repairs can be made. They were given a check from the local burn fund, and are being helped by American Red Cross.

Although the cause of the fire is still under investigation, initial reports show that the fire was started by improperly disposed-of smoking materials on the back deck.

From Casper Fire-EMS:

The Casper Fire-EMS Department would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that proper disposal of all smoking materials is critical to fire prevention.  They should always be placed in a non-combustible container such as a tin or steel can, and they should be wetted with water or placed in sand to ensure they are completely out.  Never place smoking materials in combustible containers such as planters or regular garbage can.
