UNDATED (AP) — The Montreal Canadiens have regained sole possession of first place in the NHL’s Eastern Conference, although they needed a shootout to beat Ottawa 4-3.

Lars Eller opened the scoring seven minutes into the first period before adding the deciding shootout goal. P.K. Subban (SOO’-ban) added a goal and an assist for the Canadiens, who blew a 3-1 lead before winning their fourth straight to move two points ahead of Pittsburgh in the East.

Also in the NHL, Ilya Kovalchuk (KOH’-vul-chuhk) notched his league-leading fourth short-handed tally, part of New Jersey’s three-goal first period in a 5-2 win over Philadelphia. Adam Henrique (hehn-REEK’) scored twice as the Devils won for the third time in four games since a six-game winless skid.

Calgary and Detroit were tied 2-2 until Lee Stempniak, Curtis Glencross and Blake Comeau scored in the first 10 minutes of the third period to lead the Flames to a 5-2 victory. The Red Wings have dropped three straight, all coming against teams that have been in the Western Conference cellar within the last week.

NEW YORK (AP) — Anaheim Ducks right wing Corey Perry has been suspended for four games without pay by the NHL for a high, late check on Minnesota’s Jason Zucker in last night’s game. Zucker was leveled by a violent hit from Perry in the second period, nearly a full second after Zucker passed the puck. Perry received a major penalty for interference and a game misconduct.
