Brett Smith accounted for 385 yards of total offense, ran for two touchdowns and threw for another, as the Wyoming Cowboys won their 89th Homecoming game 38-31 over the New Mexico Lobos Saturday at War Memorial Stadium. Smith's two t-d runs in the fourth quarter turned out to be the difference, as the Pokes stayed undefeated in the Mountain West.

Smith scored from 3-yards out to put the Cowboys back in front 31-24 with 10:34 left in the game. Then an interception by safety Jesse Sampson off a tipped pass put UW at the Lobos 48-yard line. The very next play Smith out-raced the New Mexico defense down the right sideline for a 48-yard score, and a 38-24 Wyoming lead.

New Mexico answered with a 23-yard t-d pass from back-up QB David Vega to Marquis Bundy with 1:06 remaining, but the Pokes recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock with two kneel downs.

Wyoming (4-2, 2-0) raced out to a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter behind a pair of Shaun Wick touchdown runs of 11 and 14 yards, plus a Smith to Jalen Claiborne 26-yard scoring strike. They led 21-3 at half.

New Mexico (2-4, 0-2) rallied behind a Cole Gautsche 49-yard scamper, an 8-yard Jhurell Pressley t-d run that followed a UW turnover and a Gautsche to Kasey Carrier 25-yard t-d pass that tied the game at 24 with 13:16 left in the game.

The Cowboys generated 532 yards of total offense, which included 285 on the ground. Smith ran for 138, while Wick added 116. Smith went 19-of-33 for 247 in the air. The Wyoming defense allowed 436 total yards to the Lobos, but managed to hold them to 111 yards less than they average on the ground per game. New Mexico ran for 257, but came in tops in the nation at nearly 368 per game. Jordan Stanton led the Cowboy defense with a career-high 14 tackles, which included one tackle for loss, while Marqueston Huff added 10 tackles and a fumble recovery.

Next up is the annual Border War against rival Colorado State. They'll meet for the 105th time in the history of the series. Kick-off is set for Noon at War Memorial Stadium.
