Two people died in a collision at First and Poplar streets on Thursday evening, according to a news release from the Casper Police Department.

The collision of a passenger car with a pickup resulted in the deaths of the two occupants of the car, Casper Police Sgt. Mike Ogden said in a news release early Friday.

The occupants of the pickup -- an adult and two children -- were taken to the Wyoming Medical Center for treatment, Ogden said.

"The accident is still under investigation and no names will be released pending the notification of kin," he said.

Earlier Thursday, a large number of emergency vehicles and law enforcement personnel responded to the scene of a serious car crash at the intersection of First Street and Poplar near downtown Casper.

As of 11:15 p.m., it was unclear how many people were injured, or how serious those injuries may be.

A photo posted on social media shows what appears to be a Natrona County Sheriff's deputy approaching a crashed black-colored passenger car. In the photo, the deputy is evidently pointing a gun at the car.

Tom Morton, reporter for K2 Radio News, is on scene. He said at least one pickup and one passenger car were involved in the crash.

The pickup remained in the intersection of First Street and Poplar, while the heavily-damaged passenger car is on the sidewalk on the southeast corner of the intersection.

At least two ambulances have left the scene, one of which was apparently escorted by a Casper police vehicle. At least two other ambulances responded to the scene.

The Casper Fire-EMS Department responded with numerous vehicles including its large ladder truck. The ladder truck planted its stabilizing legs and raised the ladder to review the scene from overhead.

Other responding agencies included the Mills Fire Department, the Casper Police Department, the Wyoming Medical Center, the Sheriff's Office, and the Wyoming Highway Patrol.

Police at the scene could not say how many vehicles were involved in the crash.

The intersection is closed. Eastbound traffic on First Street probably was blocked in Mills. Westbound traffic on First Street was blocked at Nichols, and northbound traffic on Poplar Street was blocked at Collins Drive.

Drivers traveling southbound on Poplar Street were allowed to turn westbound on First Street.

We will update this story as we learn more.
