Bob Seger will be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame on Thursday night. Seger says not taking a songwriting credit for the 1978 classic “Old Time Rock and Roll” is one of his biggest career regrets.Seger admits not putting his name on the song was an overly generous gesture and in retrospect was a bad move on his part.

The blockbuster tune was included on the album Stranger In Town and was co-written by George Jackson and Thomas Jones.  How did Bob’s name come to be left off the credits?

“It was a rush thing, we were goin’ to Europe, (my manager) Punch (Andrews) says, ‘Well, you rewrote some of the lyrics, you gotta take some credit!’ I said, ‘Ah, they haven’t got a pot to piss in, let ’em keep the money, y’know? And I’m doin’ fine, y’know. . .’ (Laughs) But, oh man, was that a bad mistake! Y’know, not because of the money — (but) because we coulda controlled where it went. Y’know, we coulda had some say about those stupid commercials they put it in.”

He did at one point consider getting his name on the credits!

“I remember I had a session with Bruce Hornsby, and I was tellin’ him the story. And I told him how I wrote part of it, and he said, ‘Man, you oughta go to those guys and say, ‘C’mon, we’re men, you know I re-wrote every verse. It’s time, y’know, I got credit on it.’ I took that to my manager Punch, and, y’know, Punch just said (laughs), ‘They’re just gonna laugh you outta the room (laughs)!” )

I’m sure he’s calculated all of the money he’s missed out on due to a lack of crediting on a huge song that still soothes the soul. Sorry Bob, but congratulations on your Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction.
