Original Story: A Wyoming Department of Criminal Investigation spokesperson says at about 9:20pm on Tuesday, September 30th, officers were called to the 1400 block of Hornchurch, on Casper's east side, for a report of a domestic disturbance involving a gun.

Details are limited, but officers were confronted on scene, by an armed male subject.

He was shot, then taken to Wyoming Medical Center, where he later died of his injuries.

His name and age are being withheld, pending notification of family.

The Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation has taken over the investigation of this incident.

Check back for more information as it becomes available.

Message from Chief Jim Wetzel:

As previously released, on the evening of September 30th, Casper Police Officers responded to a physical domestic disturbance where a male was reported as having a gun. Two Casper Police Officers were confronted by the armed male at the front of the residence.

The male drew his weapon on the officers and was subsequently shot by one of the officers. The male later succumbed to the fatal gunshot wound at the Wyoming Medical Center.

This is a tragic incident for all involved; not only for the law enforcement, fire, and EMS first responders, but even more importantly for the family of the deceased. Officers of the Casper Police Department train and prepare for these exact situations.

Department protocol and procedure following such officer involved shooting incidents is to render immediate aid, contain and secure the scene, and immediately hand over the investigation to the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation.

The Casper Police Department will additionally and concurrently conduct its
own internal investigation to review and ensure officers’ conduct and actions were in accordance with Department policies and procedures.

Officers directly involved in the shooting incident are placed on paid administrative leave during the investigation.

This is in no way an indictment on their actions but rather a standard precautionary and
prudent procedure taken while thorough collection and examination of the facts can be conducted with determination of fair and accurate conclusions.

While the investigation by DCI is still underway, as the facts and circumstances have been relayed to me, I commend the professionalism and conduct of our officers involved in this horribly tragic incident.

Our hearts and condolences are with the family.

This is not the resolution we ever hope for or seek when we are called upon to respond to such situations.

Additionally, the nature of these incidents, with the following investigations and the inherent scrutiny over actions, can be trying for the officers involved.

I ask for Casper to please be patient and keep all involved in your thoughts and prayers during this time.

Jim Wetzel
Chief of Police
Casper Police Department
